I’m a quality compliance manager at a construction equipment company. Every month, I review roughly 60–80 units—excavators, skid steers, concrete mixers, and generators—before they go out to customers. In 2025 alone, I’ve already rejected about 12% of first deliveries because they missed spec. That’s a lot of rework and delayed projects. It was off by a full three RPM. The vendor said “it’s within industry standard.” I checked. It wasn’t. Normal tolerance is ±1 RPM. We rejected the entire batch. They redid it at their cost, but the delay pushed our customer’s project back by two weeks.
That cost us a $22,000 redo and a pissed-off customer. The vendor’s mistake? They were trying to be everything to everyone. They’d rushed the design because their engineering team was stretched across too many product lines.

But 85% of our operators identified the specialist’s machine as “more refined” in terms of joystick feel and track control. The cost difference? What I’ve observed (and this is just my perspective) is that within Hyundai Construction Equipment, they operate like a specialized division. Their engineers aren’t the same people designing the battery for the IONIQ 6. They have dedicated teams for hydraulic systems, for compact equipment, for generators and air compressors. That’s the difference: a company can have broad reach if each division acts like a specialist. The problem arises when one team tries to cover everything without clear boundaries. Hyundai’s service network is also something I’ve seen work well—technicians who know a specific model inside out, not a “jack-of-all-trades” showing up with a generic toolkit.
Look, I get why people go with the cheapest option—budgets are real. But the hidden costs add up. I’ve rejected an entire shipment of generators because the fuel line connectors didn’t match the spec. That cost a small developer two weeks and a replacement fee. If you ask me, a supplier who says “we don’t do that—but here’s a specialist” is a thousand times more trustworthy than one who says “sure, we can do that” without knowing the details.
To be fair, generalists have their place—especially if your project is low-stakes and you don’t need tight tolerances. But if you’re relying on that excavator or concrete mixer for a multi-million-dollar project, don’t let a vendor’s overconfidence become your problem. I’d rather partner with someone who knows what they’re good at—and admits what they’re not.
