Whether you're keeping a Hyundai excavator running, outfitting a crew with an air compressor, or scheduling crane safety checks, there's no single answer that fits every jobsite. Actually, there isn't even a single answer for one machine—it depends on age, warranty, duty cycle, and who is doing the work. That's why I think in scenarios instead of rules of thumb.
These are the three scenarios that show up the most in my purchase orders and planning meetings. They look unrelated, but they all follow the same pattern: choose the lower-cost option only when you've accounted for the cost of being wrong.
Starting point: know what you're actually paying for
I've been tracking equipment and MRO spending at a mid-sized construction firm for six years. I've analyzed over $180,000 in cumulative spend and I still get surprised, not by the big-ticket items, but by the fine print. So before I get to the scenarios, here's my baseline rule: look at total cost first, not invoice price. If a part or tool fails on the job, the full price includes the hours, the fuel, the schedule, and the phone calls you don't want to make.
1. If you own a Hyundai excavator, know your parts source
Let's say you have two excavators on the fleet. The first is under warranty. The second is eight years old with over 9,000 hours. The right parts strategy for them is not the same.
For the under-warranty machine, I recommend Hyundai OEM parts online through the dealer or the manufacturer's parts portal. A $90 genuine hydraulic filter isn't an expense; it's evidence. If a warranty claim ever gets complicated, the documented parts history matters. I've seen a $14,000 repair estimate get ignored because the filter was aftermarket and no one could prove it met spec. It's not fair, but it's real.
For the older machine, you have more flexibility. Many owners use aftermarket filters, hoses, and wear parts with no trouble. I do too. But I still verify part numbers against Hyundai OEM parts online before ordering. That doesn't mean you have to buy there; it means you have a reference for dimensions, specs, and superseded numbers. 2. If you need an air compressor, match it to the actual air demand
The same thinking applies to air compressors. I get asked "Which compressor should I buy?" all the time. My first question is always: what are you powering, and for how long at a time?
If you're a service crew doing light cleanup, tire inflation, and occasional nail guns, a portable Milwaukee air compressor might be enough. It's compact, it doesn't need a trailer, and it matches the duty cycle of that kind of work. I've had one in our maintenance shop for years and it's been solid.
But if you're running a breaker on a concrete repair, or a crew of four with needle scalers, that same unit won't cut it. You're looking at a towable compressor with enough CFM, and the running cost is different: fuel, filters, oil, and regular checks. Ignoring duty cycle is how I once watched a crew "save" $800 on a compressor and then lose two days on a job because it kept thermal tripping. That's penny-wise, pound-foolish.
3. Who should inspect a crane?
Which brings me to the question I hear more than any other: who should inspect a crane?
The short answer: it isn't just a mechanic's job, and it isn't just an insurance requirement. For construction cranes in the U.S., OSHA's construction crane standard (29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC) assigns daily visual checks to a competent person—someone who can identify hazards and has the authority to stop work. Periodic and comprehensive inspections are generally handled by a qualified person, and many companies use a third-party inspector for annual checks or after a major assembly, which I think is a good second set of eyes.
I'm not a safety consultant. I'm the person who signs the PO, so I always verify current requirements at osha.gov and with our safety director before scheduling any crane inspection. What I can tell you from the cost side is this: a $1,500 inspection feels like an overhead line you can delay. The cost of a downed crane or a serious incident is a multiple of that. Inspect first.
How to tell which scenario you're in
There's no one-size-fits-all answer here, but there are three questions that usually make the decision clear.
- Is the equipment under warranty, lease, or a critical-fleet position? If yes, documented OEM parts are the safest default. If no and the machine is old, aftermarket is fine as long as you verify the spec.
- What is the real air demand? If the task is light and intermittent, a portable unit can work. If it's continuous, high-CFM, or tied to production, budget for the bigger compressor—and the fuel and filters that go with it.
- What does the regulation require? For cranes, OSHA sets the floor, but state/provincial rules, customer site rules, and insurance contracts can add more. When the answer isn't clear, get a qualified person involved.
In my experience, the people who get this right aren't the ones with the biggest budget. They're the ones who treat the decision as a total cost problem, not a price comparison. Whether it's a Hyundai excavator, a crew air compressor, or a crane inspection, the cheap path is only cheap if it holds up when it matters.
