Backhoe vs excavator: which one should you pick?

A backhoe is a tractor with a loader bucket on the front and a digging arm on the back; it's great for utility work, shallow trenches, and loading material. An excavator has a 360-degree rotating cab and a digging arm designed for deep, heavy work. Actually, that's not entirely true of every backhoe—some have a limited swing, but it's not the same as an excavator's full rotation.
