There's no one-size-fits-all answer for construction equipment
If you've ever tried to figure out what equipment you actually need—excavator, forklift, skid steer, backhoe, or something else—you know the feeling. Every dealer tells you their machine is the answer. Every blog post gives you a generic list. But here's the thing: your situation is unique.

What I learned is that most of the confusion comes from trying to find a single 'best' machine when the question should be: what fits your specific workflow?

But here's something vendors won't tell you: skid steers aren't great for deep digging or heavy lifting. If your primary need is digging foundations or moving large loads regularly, you'll want something more specialized.
Scenario B: You need heavy lifting and material handling
For our warehouse and yard operations, we rely heavily on forklifts and telehandlers. If you're moving pallets of materials, loading trucks, or stacking inventory, these are your go-to machines.

How to tell which scenario you're in
Here's a simple framework I use when evaluating our equipment needs:
- What's your primary work? If it's moving materials, go to Scenario B. If it's digging, go to Scenario C. If it's a mix of light tasks, Scenario A.
- How many hours per week? Under 20 hours? Rent. 20-40 hours? Strongly consider buying. Over 40? Buy new with full warranty.
- What's your job site like? Tight and confined? Skid steer. Improved surfaces? Forklift. Rough terrain? Telehandler or backhoe.
The most expensive machine is the one that sits idle. I'd rather have a versatile machine working 40 hours a week than a specialized beast working 10 hours. That $200 savings from buying the 'cheaper but wrong' machine turned into a $24,000 problem when downtime on a critical project forced us to rent a replacement for six weeks.
